LAKESIDE DAISIES

25"h X 22"w
2012

The Lakeside Daisy (Hymenoxys herbaria) is the rarest of Ohio’s native plant species.  The largest natural population of Lakeside Daisy in the US grows on the Marblehead Peninsula in Ottawa County, home of my “summer studio” for a few years.

First  I photographed the flowers.  then I thread painted them on a sheer organdy fabric.  Carefully cutting the flowers out, they were free hand appliqued onto the background making it look like they were stitched directly on but eliminating the stiffness and bulk that would have created.

The background fabrics were hand dyed gradations.  This was early in my dye career and I loved experimenting with the various values.
